A Short History of Edinburgh Organ Studio

Edinburgh Organ Studio was opened in 1967 by Bill McIntosh. Bill's bond with the music industry started at a War Hospital in the far east. Recovering from wounds he picked up in Burma, Bill had the pleasure of his bed being placed next to a patient who had a gramophone with a selection of organ records This fortuitous meeting started a love for the organ and music in general that remains close to Bills heart even today.

After the war Bill worked with his brother in law Jimmy of Clinkscales Music , a general music store in Melrose. Within a few months Bill had introduced organs to the shop. After a few years working with Clinkscales Bill decided it was time to start on his own and in 1967 took the plunge by opening up the Hammond Organ Studio, in our current premises, at the bottom of Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile.

He later changed the name to Edinburgh Organ Studio as he began to expand by stocking other makes of organs such as Yamaha, Wurlitzer, and Eminent. The business has evolved considerably throughout the years, changing with the times and customer tastes. We still have customers who want home entertainment organs however this trend has been mostly replaced by customers who want keyboards and digital pianos. For our Church customers, we are still Scotland's number one specialist in Classical Church Organs.

The stock may have changed over time but Edinburgh Organ Studio's number one philosophy has remained the same since the early years: to provide a complete personal service to all its customers.

The business is now run by Bill's son Kerr, Bill is still very much involved in the day to day running of the shop and he particularly enjoys the customer interaction side.
